59 Years Later: Hiroshima & Nagasaki

In August 2004, I received the opportunity to attend and speak at an international peace conference in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. During the two weeks I spent in Japan, I met with activists from around the world, as well as Hibakusha (survivors of the atomic bombs), and attended the memorial ceremonies for the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Each day in Hiroshima, I walked through the peace park and photographed the people and the monuments in the park. Having campaigned with local peace groups in DC against the use of nuclear weapons, my goal was to create a compelling series of photographs from Hiroshima that could be shown to the American public to help raise awareness about the aftermath of such destruction. As the series developed, it became not merely a documentation of the physical destruction by the bombs, but also a reflection of the pain still felt in Hiroshima 59 years later. This series is not printed in limited editioned.
